resting in god's word...

i have been wanting to post this for days and finally have the time tonight. i am not sure if any of you watch the world wide telethon with all the stars tonight on CNN or if you even think about haiti now that it is slowly fading from the headlines, but for me, my heart is still broken. i still shed a tear or twenty or two hundred each day when i read or see the stories coming out of haiti. i still wake each morning and pray for this nation, for the orphans, for the sick, for the thirsty, for the hungry, and for the aid that desperately needs to make it to each of these. sooooo, tonight i wanted to share these scriptures that we read last sunday in our worship service at church as we prayed for the people of haiti. we prayed for peace among the incredible fear and loss that they are experiencing. we prayed for ben and katie, who are faithfully serving these broken people and sharing the love of jesus christ while doing so. we prayed that in the midst of all this chaos that god would be glorified. that the people of haiti would see that HE is a bigger than an earthquake and that they can find refuge in Him. these are the scriptures that were read and these are god's truths that continue to resonate within my heart...

"The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble." {Psalm 9: 9}

"Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." {Psalm 46: 1-2}

"Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed." {Psalm 57:1}

"Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings." {Psalm 61:1-4}

"For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help." {Psalm 22:24}

"He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap…" {Psalm 113: 7}

"Surely he will save you from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday." {Psalm 91: 3-6}

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified… for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
{Deuteronomy 31:6}

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world…"
{James 1:27}

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another..."
{John 13: 34-35}

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." {Romans 8: 35- 39}

these truths written thousands of years ago seem as though they were written for such a time as this and remind me of how big, how all-knowing, how unfathomable, and how incredible god is! he IS in control of this and everything else in this world. he IS big enough, strong enough, and absolutely able to bring peace, relief, and miracles to haiti and to all of his creation.

please continue to pray for this nation, for all those that are there to serve, heal, and love these broken people, and for the LORD to be glorified in every detail of it.

steph,

thanks for sharing all these great truths. jessica cash is flying out tomorrow as part of a medical team. she'll be there all week. i've been following ben and katie's blog and it causes me to actually engage more with what is really happening there. i just can't imagine the devastation...it takes my breath away as well.

steph,

i had to wait to read this post when i had time to REALLY read it. I continue to pray for everyone in haiti going through this tragedy. it continues to be humbling.

wow. the scriptures are really amazing and very relevant to this crisis.

i am going to print these to have in the days and years to come. Psalm 57:1 is one that I remember reading in someone's blog when the twin towers fell. it is amazing how the Bible always has, does and will prepare us for all triumphs and tragedies in our lives.

Thanks for posting this one. You know i need it!! Muuuuahhhh!
